Evening Prayer: January 4th

Loving God, I thank you for the blessings of today and for your abiding presence. Throughout this day you have been with me, offering guidance and direction. As I take my rest this night, grant me your peace which passes all understanding and help my strength to be renewed so that if it be your will I wake to another day, I will be able to serve you even better than I did today. In the blessed name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Hymn: Children of the Heavenly King by John Cennick

1 Children of the heav’nly King,
as you journey, sweetly sing;
sing your Savior’s worthy praise,
glorious in his works and ways.

2 We are trav’ling home to God
in the way the pilgrims trod;
they are happy now, and we
soon their happiness shall see

3 Lift your eyes and see the light;
Zion’s city is in sight!
There our endless home shall be;
there our Lord we soon shall see.

4 Fear not, children, joyful stand
on the borders of your land;
Jesus Christ, your Father’s Son,
bids you undismayed go on.

5 Lord, obediently we go,
gladly leaving all below;
lead us now in all we do
and we still will follow you.

Daily Scripture Passage: 1 John 3:22-4:6

1 John 3:22-4:6 (ESV)

22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

Test the Spirits

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
